I know from past experience that pseudoephedrine works for me. I know that phenylephrine.... doesn’t. Not so much. I had still been taking phenylephrine along with some guaifene sen/dextromethorphan up until yesterday, because it’s what I had , but I was finding it impossible to sleep.

(Background: I had a bad cough starting last Monday and getting progressively worse)

So, I cut off the guaf, still had an enhanced headache and weird tightness in the throat. Cut off the phenylephrine, got like an hour or two of sleep and woke up coughing as violently as I can recall. So, went back on the guaifenesen.

So, now I know that phenylephrine is basically the devil when it comes to decongestants for me. Huzzah. Not only doesn’t give much relief, but apparently screws with me.

Im the same way, its the real stuff or nothing. My remedy for what you describe is pretty much the same - pseudoephedrine, guaifenesen/dextromethorphan, naproxen sodium.  + honey.  Lots of honey.

Going to stop by the pharmacy for the real stuff after a while. Thing is, I had a flu-type thing about three weeks ago, had a week mostly in the clear, and then had a whole week of whole-body aches before the cough thing. One of my younger brothers went straight off the same flu into a three week cough, and now has something GI - and another family member caught a 48 hour vomit bug last week . Exciting.
